Young Artist Competition

The Competition

Are you a young accomplished instrumentalist? This may be your chance to win a guest artist spot with the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra.

This year’s Young Artist Competition is open to all orchestral instruments excluding piano. The winner of the competition will perform with the GJSO in a subscription series concert during the 2012-2013 season. To be eligible, contestants must have been born on or after March 11, 1986 (25 years or younger). Previous winners are ineligible.

Repertoire

Please choose any complete standard concerto with music readily available, excluding:

  • Arutiunian: Trumpet Concerto
  • Barber: Violin Concerto 
  • Bernstein: Mass:Three Meditations 
  • Dvorak: Cello Concerto
  • Higdon: Percussion Concerto 
  • Sibelius: Violin Concerto 
  • Tomasi: Trombone Concerto
  • Vivaldi: The Four Seasons
  • Vivaldi: Flute Concerto in G minor
  • Vivaldi: Guitar Concerto in D Major  

The Competition

Submit a CD or DVD of your performance (with piano accompaniment) of the entire concerto you will use for the competition, along with your application and a non-refundable application fee of $35 postmarked by December 16, 2011. Online applicants can submit the recording of their performance by uploading a music file no larger than 100mb along with their $35 application fee paid by Visa, Mastercard or Discover and their application.

Finalists will be notified by January 23, 2012 and invited to perform in person on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, CO.

The winner will be announced immediately following the final competition. Finalists are encouraged to provide their own accompanists, however, a local accompanist can be made available for a substantial fee.

A score must be provided for the judges and orchestral cuts will be taken. Finalists will receive an honorarium to help defray travel expenses.

The Prizes

1st Prize will perform with the GJSO during the 2011-2012 Season and receive $1500

Runner-up will receive $500
